Visiting Americus

Here is a Sample Itinerary 

 

Day One-Friday

  •  Visit Andersonville National Historic Site and tour the National Prisoner of War Museum and former Civil War Prison Site (allow 2 to 3 hours)

  • Lunch at the Andersonville Restaurant

  • Visit the Civil War Village of Andersonville which includes the Drummer Boy Civil War Museum, Pioneer Farm, Depot Museum, and unique downtown shops (allow up to 1 hour)

  • Depart from Andersonville for Americus (15 minute drive time)

  • Check in at the 1906 Pathway Inn Bed and Breakfast, settle in to your room freshen up and then join us in the lounge for some refreshments before going to dinner.

  •   Dine at the Windsor Grand Dining Room or at any one of the many other fine local restaurants

  • Possibly attend a live production at the Rylander Theatre

     

 

Day Two-Saturday

    Visit Habitat for Humanity's Global Village and Discovery Center where you will find typical houses built by Habitat it several countries.  You will also see examples of the run down shacks that these houses replace.   Within the complex you will find a museum, video theater, and interactive activities. (allow up to 3 hours)

  • Take the Sam Shortline Train to Plains and Archery.  It usually leaves the station close to the Global Village and Discovery Center at 11.30 am.  

  • Or spend some time in beautiful downtown Americus have lunch and do some shopping.

  • Or take a tour of the Rylander Theater.

  • Other Afternoon options include:  

A visit to the nationally known Carabella Collections  on highway 19 just north of town.

A visit to 1850's Westville in Lumkin (40 minute drive west of Americus)

A visit to Providence Canyon (45 minute drive west of Americus)

A round of golf at one of three local semi private golf courses (3 minutes to 15 minutes from our inn).

A tour of the Georgia Rural Telephone Museum in Leslie (20 minute driving time allow 1 hour.  The museum is not always open on weekends so check first.)

  • Return to 1906 Pathway Inn to relax and have some afternoon tea.

  • Have dinner at the Forsyth Bar & Grill a favorite with the locals.

             

        Day Three-Sunday

  •  On Sundays you can attend Maranatha Baptist Church and listen to President Carter teach Sunday School.  The church opens at 8:30 am and the school starts at 10 am.  If you stay for the worship service after, you will have the opportunity to have your photograph taken with President and Mrs. Carter.

  • Other days of the week visit the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site.

  • Lunch at Mom's Kitchen in Plains (open on Sundays)

  • Visit Jimmy Carter's Boyhood Farm

  •   Return to Americus and the 1906 Pathway Inn

  •   On Sunday evenings dine at Ryan's or at the Chinese or Mexican restaurants located here in town.  On other days check out one of our excellent bar and grills.

 

Day Four-Monday

  • Depart Americus to explore Columbus, Callaway Gardens or Warm Springs
