After
spending nearly three years searching for their ideal bed
and breakfast Chuck and Angela finally happened on the
1906 Pathway Inn in Americus. It was love at first
sight and everything they
had been looking for. The beautiful nearly one
hundred year old house was stunning and elegant in style
with stately columns, beautiful stained glass and
handcrafted woodwork. The small town of Americus,
population 18,000, was just perfect. It was so
unlike many
of the other towns they had looked at, here in Americus
they found a vibrant
downtown with thriving shops and businesses. They
had at last found their dream home and bed and breakfast. The
dream had started back when they were living in the Florida
Keys. After surviving Hurricane Andrew and the many
lesser know storms that followed. Chuck, a fishing
guide and his wife Angela, the Controller for the
concession in John Pennekamp State Park, decided it was
time to leave the coast and head inland and away from the continuing
threat of Hurricanes. At
that time Chuck had lived in the Keys for more than twenty
years. He moved there in the late seventies after
selling his maintenance business in Colorado
Springs. He lived on a 46' sailing boat and spent
much time fishing and sailing off the Keys and in the Bahamas.
His love of
fishing led him to get his Captains license and he began
running a party fishing boat out of Holiday Isle in
Islamorada. That was what he was doing when he first
met Angela. She was living in England at the time
and was visiting an old friend who lived in the Keys.
This friend introduced them to each other and it was not long before they fell in love and decided to
get married. Angela
gave up her career as an Accountant, for a large shipping
company in London, to
join Chuck in Islamorada where they set up home. A
year later their son Christopher was born. During this time Chuck
had changed from off shore fishing and was now running a backcountry
fishing business. Once their son
started preschool Angela began working at John Pennekamp State
Park. They were now both involved in tourism and had found
something they loved doing, dealing with the public. It
was this love of helping people that led them to the new turn in
their life and the move to find a bed and breakfast. Now
their lives revolve around the inn, school activities with
their son and life in small town Americus. Chuck runs the
inn as a full time job, taking care of the guests, cooking
breakfast and dealing with the unending maintenance of a 100
year old house. He is on the board of directors for the
Americus Tourism Council and is currently serving as their
President. Angela works as a Senior Financial Analyst for
Habitat for Humanity who have their Administrative Headquarters in
Americus. She also takes care of the inns bookings,
marketing (including building and maintaining their web site) and the day to day accounting. They love the world
of bed and breakfasts and have made many friends in the
business. They are happy to say that all of their guests
have been wonderful, some have even been famous. Among the
famous guests who have stayed with them are senator and
presidential candidate Jack Kemp,
prisoner-of-war Rhonda Cornum, who was captured by Iraqis during the
first Gulf War, popular music group Sixpence None the Richer,
contemporary Christian singer Natalie Grant and the Christian
musical group The Anointed. Life running a bed and
breakfast has been quite different from anything they have ever done
before. It can sometimes be very demanding with the need
to be on duty 24/7 but it is always enjoyable.
They love pampering their guests and you only have to read
the many thank you notes and messages in the room journals to
see how much their guests appreciate this.
